Almost two months ago I posted about a political party in the Netherlands composed of pedophiles. I suspected that at least one of them had a record, and lo! one of them does.
Van den Berg was fined and given a suspended prison sentence for molesting an 11-year-old boy in 1987. After his background became known last month, he was chased from the trailer park where he lived in the city of Oostvoorne.
Despite the group being allowed to participate in Dutch elections, they do not have much support. The startlingly thing remains they succeeded because of freedom of speech and expression. That is not to say we should get rid of free speech and expression or that we should somehow limit who has the right to them. But we do need to be aware that groups like this party and NAMBLA flock to these kinds of rules, often treating them as a justification of their views.
The situation is made worse by the fact that the law they wish to change may actually need to be reviewed and readdressed. Society has changed. Children are more openly sexually active. There has been an increase in the pregnancy rate among teenagers. As a whole, we do need to rethink our understanding of child sexuality, what it entails, and how complex it may actually be.
Nevertheless, groups like the PNVD party are less concerned about the well-being of children and more concerned with decriminalizing acts they wish to commit or have already committed. As Anke de Wijn states, “There are few limitations on free speech, and that’s good, but this group is making misuse of the privilege, to provoke.”
Sometime freedom of speach goes way to far. There are laws where I live that prevent people of publicly speaking of harming another person. By their simply saying they are pedophiles they are in essence saying that they support abuse and the victimization of children is what defines their being. Shut them down!
