Much in the same vein as “This Week in the News,” the Bulletin Board will list news stories and also blog and forum posts. It should be noted at I do not necessarily endorse or support the items linked. I simply find them to be interesting and/or relevant to the issues discussed on this blog. As the weeks go by, each new “volume” will be added to a page link, that way the way easily available without having to do a search or hunt through all my posts (not that I am suggesting not to hunt through the posts).
10 more men sue Oakland over public strip searches — Ten more men have sued the city of Oakland alleging that police publicly strip-searched them in violation of their civil rights. The latest federal lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, seeks $10 million and cites incidents from 2003 to 2007 in which the men say Oakland police officers pulled down the men’s pants on the street during arrests, exposing their buttocks or genitalia to the public, according to court documents. Oakland attorneys John Burris and Michael Haddad are representing the 10 plaintiffs and 21 other men in six similar suits pending against the city.
95 charges added in boys sex club case — Lake County prosecutors filed 95 additional charges Wednesday against a Vernon Hills man accused of running a “sex club” for underage boys. Michael Rebecca, 50, now faces a total of 99 counts of predatory sexual assault of a child, aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. The case against Rebecca remains under investigation and prosecutors said more charges are likely to be filed.
Be scared to scar your baby boy — Bernadine Healy M.D. writes an ethics-free, logic-free essay in the latest U.S. News & World Report on male circumcision. She mostly offers the recycled nonsense promoted by people uninterested in thinking the issue through. However, Dr. Healy searches for a new bottom in the discussion. She comes as close to stating it as anyone I’ve read…
Child in prison limbo — A 12-year-old boy has become one of Namibia’s youngest prison inmates – if not the youngest – after he was convicted of housebreaking and theft at Karasburg. The boy was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine or alternative sentence. He is now being kept at Hardap Prison, where he was transferred on Thursday last week after he had been kept in custody at Keetmanshoop since his sentencing – all despite a court order that he should serve his sentence at the Elizabeth Nepembe Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre near Rundu, almost 1 400 kilometres from his home and his family.
Children alleging abuse have history of lying, court told — Two sisters who say they were physically abused by their foster parents are not reliable witnesses as they both have a history of lying, a Wellington District Court jury was told today. The children’s former foster parents have both pleaded not guilty to assaulting the children when they lived with them between 2003 and 2006. Both accused have name suppression to protect the identity of the children, now aged 11 and 14.
Man tells court of sex abuse by couple — A MAN in his 30s told a court yesterday how he underwent counselling for the horrific sexual abuse he suffered as a boy at the hands of a married couple. He told the jury that on one occasion he went back to their home to confront Derek and Iris Way about what they had done. The man had to undergo counselling because of what he suffered, Mold crown court was told. Derek Way and his wife Iris, now in their 60s, of Ffordd y Morfa, Abergele, are alleged to have staged drink-fuelled sex parties at their home in the 1980s.
Mt. Prospect man arrested in sex abuse of teen — A Mt. Prospect man was arrested Friday in Woodstock in connection with the sexual assault of a teen over a period of nine years, police said. Gillis Martin, 40, of the 700 block of Shabonee Trail, was charged with 11 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and two counts of criminal sexual assault, authorities said. He was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail in McHenry County jail.
Neutral help sought in abuse case — Parental rights are pitted against a defendant’s rights in the case of a Cuba Township woman charged with child molestation. Lake County Assistant Public Defender Jennifer Snyder on Tuesday asked a judge to appoint a lawyer for two children who police say were sexually abused by Yolanda Dipert, 46. Snyder said she wants the lawyer to determine if the children, a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, will discuss the case with defense investigators independent of their father’s wishes.
Pervert jailed for repeatedly raping young boy — A predatory and relentless paedophile who raped a young boy before sexually abusing another was found with two other children when police called at his caravan. Pervert Michael Adams subjected the youngest boy to repeated rapes and sexual abuse. He is now starting an indefinite sentence for public protection, having been told he would only be released in seven-and-a-half years time if he was no longer deemed a danger to children.
Roy Exum: Calling For A Whistle — I write today about former Oak Ridge Commissioner Carl “Bubba” Scarbrough, a pedophile who was found guilty this week of flagrant and repeated sexual misconduct in a west Knoxville health spa that resulted in a 13-year-old boy being forcibly raped. His trial, of course, was the talk of Knoxville, especially since the 65-year-old father of four has been a force in Anderson County for years as a Democratic leader and organized labor. This guy was once chief of the Atomic Trades and Labor Council and a Y-12 employee.
South Africa Debuts Tougher Laws on Rape — The definition of rape was until now narrow and outdated. Attacks on children, for instance, were often classified as indecent assault, not rape — even though the young are often targeted because of the mistaken belief that sex with a child can rid the body of the HIV virus. The new law says that sexual penetration by objects other than a penis would be classed as rape — which usually is punished with a life sentence — rather than sexual assault, for which there are lesser sentences. For the first time, male-on-male sexual assault is classed as rape.
Woman charged with new sex assault — A 27-year-old Skowhegan woman who pleaded guilty to sexual assault involving a 13-year-old boy about two years ago was back in court Friday on charges she again had sex with the same boy. Jessica L. Bowring, is charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and six counts of violating conditions of her release. All of the charges involve the same boy she had sex with when he was 13. The original crime occurred in 2005.
