Bulletin Board v.33

10-year-old subjected to torture by Israeli soldiers — A 10-year-old boy was subjected to physical abuse amounting to torture for 2.5 hours by Israeli soldiers who stormed his family’s shop on 11 June, seeking information on the location of a handgun. The boy was repeatedly beaten, slapped and punched in the head and stomach, forced to hold a stress position for half and hour, and threatened. He was deeply shocked and lost two molar teeth as a result of the assault.

Admitting abuse key to Clark deal; Kohlwey says she wanted boy to know suspect took responsibility — A deal for Candace Clark hinged on her pleading to a homicide charge and to all the charges related to the severe abuse of a boy in a West Oneida Street rental home last year, District Attorney Jane Kohlwey said. Clark accepted a plea agreement Thursday, just days before her trial was to begin. It would have been possibly the largest trial in Columbia County history, with dozens of witnesses scheduled for two weeks of testimony.

Anguish of city’s 100 male rape victims — Men who have suffered the anguish of rape are suffering in silence, despite more than 100 Preston men falling victim to the crime each year, shock figures reveal. Around 300 Lancashire men who are raped or sexually assaulted contact the Lancashire Male Rape Support Association every year – and 96 of them are from Preston

British soldiers accused of sickening sex assault on Iraqi boy, 14 — British soldiers forced a boy of 14 to carry out an act of oral sex on a fellow male prisoner in Iraq, according to shocking new allegations made about the behaviour of British troops. The Ministry of Defence confirmed yesterday that the Royal Military Police (RMP) have launched an investigation. If the allegations are proved, it would mark a sordid low in the behaviour of British troops in Iraq, and damage further the reputation of Britain in the Middle East.

Former Prosecutor Gets Jail Time for Sex Abuse — Beth Modica, 44, was arrested in January and indicted on charges including statutory rape and sex abuse. In April, she pleaded guilty to having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old boy and performing oral sex on a 15-year-old boy at her home in Sloatsburg. Prosecutors alleged that she also provided marijuana and alcohol to the teenagers.

Don’t teach boys to be like girls — Sue Palmer is a former head teacher, literacy adviser and the author of 21st Century Boys. She says it is a biological necessity that boys run about, take risks, swing off things and compete with each other to develop properly. “If they can’t, a lot of them find it impossible to sit still, focus on a book or wield a pencil,” she says, “so their behaviour is considered ‘difficult’, they get into trouble and tumble into a cycle of school failure.”

Foster abuse case settled: $11 million for 8 boys — In the world of Internet crimes, it seemed fairly straightforward to solve. The trail led directly to a foster father named Ronald Young, who lived in rural Pierce County. But according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of Young’s victims, local police failed to immediately act on the information, leaving the children to suffer additional abuse. This week, lawyers for eight boys who were between the ages of 5 and 12 at the time of the abuse settled the lawsuit for $11 million — with three government agencies and Young’s wife, Wendy, contributing toward the total. Young was sentenced in 2005 to 26 years in prison. Wendy Young was not charged, although the lawyers believe she should have known what was going on.

Greer outraged over play reflecting her — Feminist academic Germaine Greer has branded Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith an “insane reactionary” for attempting to portray aspects of her life in a new comedy. The Female of the Species, due to open in London’s West End this week, is loosely based on snippets from the 69-year-old Australian’s life and serves up a humorous attack on strident feminism.

Mother-Son sexual abuse — This is the follow up to the Mother-Daughter sexual abuse post. I started off doing these because of a communication I had with a reader. In talking he gave me permission to print (he read it before it appeared here) some of his story in hopes that other men will benefit from his speaking out. So I am summarizing and paraphrasing some of what he has told me. I am calling him Joe though that is not his name:

Pope’s Australia visit overshadowed by abuse case — Pope Benedict XVI flies into Australia today for the longest trip yet of his three-year papacy, to be greeted by a row about civil liberties and a sexual abuse scandal embroiling the country’s highest-ranked Roman Catholic cleric. The Pope will preside over World Youth Day, a six-day festival of peace, love and Christianity, culminating in an open-air Mass next Sunday at Sydney’s main horse-racing track, which is expected to attract up to half a million people.

Teen avoids prison time in sister’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ death — Seventeen-year-old Heather Trujillo was given an 18-year suspended sentence in the death of 7-year-old Zoe Garcia. However, she must spend six years in the youth offender program. If she does not violate the terms of her plea deal, she will not have to spend any time in prison. Trujillo will be sent to a facility in Pueblo, where she will stay until her six-year sentence is complete.

What happened to the boy they couldn’t break? — The cruelty inflicted on boys in industrial schools is perhaps the darkest stain on our history since independence. Boys, who were frequently incarcerated at the schools simply because they were orphans, were routinely flogged naked, and many were sexually abused by Christian Brothers. Those in powerful positions in the Catholic church and in government turned a blind eye to the evils inflicted in institutions that have been aptly described as the “Irish gulags”.
