Callum Carson bravely breaks a social taboo by openly talking about being the victim of male rape — SCOTLAND has witnessed a steep increase in the number of rapes reported to police. But while this crime is often viewed as an attack on women, there are male victims too. It is rare for anyone to publicly share their experience of rape – particularly a man. Callum Carson, from Bathgate, waived his right to anonymity to share his story in a bid to raise the issue of male rape and highlight a system that he feels let him down.

Misunderstanding rape, condemning juveniles — “Hard cases make bad law,” states a common legal adage. The news that a juvenile was involved in the brutal rape and murder incident of December 16, 2012 led to demands that the boy be tried in a regular criminal court and be punished as an adult. This “hard case” has led the government to take steps to formulate a “bad law” — as shown in the proposed changes to the Juvenile Justice Act of 2000, according to which children over 16 years of age, who are charged with committing “heinous” crimes, can be tried as adults in a regular criminal court.
Mr & MR Right: Abuse of gay men — It is never easy to talk about one’s experiences with molestation and sexual assault as a child and young adult irrespective of one’s sexual orientation, but when one is gay, talking about early sexual abuse of any sort becomes tricky with people rushing to connect that with the sexuality, irrespective of who was the abuser: If the abuser was a man, then that’s what made the abused gay; if the abuser was a woman, then the abused becoming gay is because he hates women; because his abuser was one; and if one is abused by a transgender then becoming gay is the ‘only real choice’. One hears it all.
