Jeffrey Sandusky arrested for setting stepdaughters

Jeffrey Sandusky, the son of Jerry Sandusky, faces 14 counts of sexual abuse against his two stepdaughters. According to police, Jeffrey repeatedly sent sexually explicit texts to both teen girls over the years:

Police launched an investigation in November 2016 after one child claimed to receive text messages from Sandusky, who was suspended without pay from his job as a corrections officer at Rockview State Prison.

In a news release, Pennsylvania State Police said Sandusky assaulted the two female accusers—who were 15 and 16 at the time—in spring 2013 and in March 2016. They were solicited by Sandusky for oral sex and nude cellphone pictures, police say.

The charges Jeffrey faces:

Pennsylvania State Police cuffed Jeffrey Sandusky on 14 counts, including solicitation (statutory sexual assault), solicitation (involuntary deviate sexual intercourse) and solicitation (photographing, videotaping, depicting on computer of filming sexual acts).

The 41-year-old also faces charges of unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, and solicitation (sexual abuse of children).

It does not appear that Jeffrey had any physical contact with either girl. He appears to have sent several lewd texts to the youngest sister recently, which she saved and later showed to her father. The father reported Jeffrey, which led to further revelations about his acts.

Based on the article, Jeffrey seemed to suspect he would get caught. On several occasions he sent the girl requests for nude pictures and later told her to delete the texts:

The next morning, Sandusky allegedly asked her to send a picture of herself getting dressed for school. He told her “to erase all the texts and that none of this ‘shit’ gets mentioned to anyone or seen by anyone,” the affidavit says.

Sandusky allegedly continued his disgusting messages, asking the accuser to “take a picture of herself while she is changing or taking a ‘piss,’” and for images of her topless or in her underwear, the affidavit states.

When she refused, Sandusky told her “they need to talk to get things straightened out.”

“No, we don’t need to talk and we aren’t going to,” the accuser replied, according to the affidavit. “You did what you did and I’m not going to give you a chance to try and justify it.

“You literally tried to guilt me into doing it and you even told me specifically what I ‘needed’ to do. You know who does that? Rapists and Abusers,” the victim continued, “not stepdads who care about their stepdaughters.

“I don’t know how many times I need to tell you no and to stop before you get it,” she added, according to court papers.

The exchange sounds improbable, however, the text messages from Jeffrey do exist, so it is likely that he may have tried to get the girl to delete the texts. The older sister stated that Jeffrey sent her a request for oral sex, which she refused:

The older sister told cops Sandusky made inappropriate comments to her in spring 2013, when her mother and sister were gone for a softball tryout. But Sandusky was home, and allegedly sent her a text message while she was in the bathroom.

“I have a question, don’t tell mom,” Sandusky allegedly texted the victim. “Would you suck me off?”

The victim asked Sandusky why he would ask her that. Sandusky allegedly replied that he wanted to “know how it felt.”

Jeffrey’s excuse for asking for the younger sister’s nude pictures was that her nudes were already online and he needed new pictures for comparison in order to take them off the internet. That lie might have worked on a younger child fifteen years ago. Today’s children are well aware that once something is online it is there forever.

It is curious that this would be his excuse since he implies he has already seen the supposed nude pictures and recognized her. The latter would imply that either her face was in the pictures or he already knew what her naked body looked like.

What is so odd is that Jeffrey watched how his father was destroyed by the allegations and conviction. One would think that he would not do anything to bring any attention to himself. He would have to know that everyone would suspect him. Even if the allegations were false, which they do not appear to be, people would still assume he was guilty.

Fortunately, he did not actually sexually abuse either girl, although the younger sister did take to showering when Jeffrey was not at home. It is unclear, however, whether this is the first time Jeffery engaged in these acts or whether it is a pattern.

My suspicion is the latter. I also think it is possible that part of reason he continued to defend his father is because of his own behavior. It is possible that the two were aware of each other’s abusive behavior or that Jerry initiated Jeffrey into abusing others. It would also not surprise me if Jeffrey later states that Jerry abused him.

While it is uncommon for abuse victims to become abusers, it does happen. One of the ways people compartmentalize their behavior is by committing lesser offenses. Jerry appears to have used intimidation, rejection, and violence to control his victims. Jeffrey may have chose coercion and playing innocent to control his. This lesser form abuse could have been a way for Jeffrey to rationalize his actions.

Given the nature of the accusations, I can see Jeffery taking a plea deal that offered probation. However, because of his father, I can also see Jeffrey facing the maximum sentence should he be convicted.

This case shows the legacy of sexual abuse, how it not only affects the victims, but how it also spreads. I cannot help wondering if this could have been prevented if someone cared as much about the boys Jerry abused as they did these two sisters. Maybe this would have prevented any abuse against Jeffrey. Maybe seeing his father getting arrested earlier would have curbed Jeffrey’s behavior.

  1. While all this may be true, I couldn’t help wondering how easy it would be to set a man up for charges like these. Also, since it in man on girl, how harsh the penalties are going to be compared to woman on boy.

Short of faking the texts, this would be a challenging set up. If the police believed the claim, their investigation would reveal whether any texts were sent. If the accuser claimed to delete the texts, there would be no grounds for a case. The only potential way is what the older sister did: make claim after their is evidence in another accusation.

Also, since it in man on girl, how harsh the penalties are going to be compared to woman on boy.

I have not looked at the sentencing guidelines for the state yet. Based on what I have seen in other cases, Jeffrey likely faces about 10 years. A woman would potentially face the same if no deal were offered, however, it is unlikely she would receive the maximum sentence.
