Vili Fualaau filed for separation from Mary Kay Letourneau, the woman who began raping Fualaau when he was 12-years-old. Police caught Letourneau after she became pregnant with Fualaau’s first child when he was 14-years-old. Letourneau faced a seven-year sentence. She received a six-month sentence with three months suspended and was required to attend sex offender treatment. However, shortly after being released, she was found again with Fualaau. The judge imposed the original seven-and-a-half year sentence. Letourneau gave birth to Fualaau’s second child while in prison. After Letourneau completed the sentence in 2004, Fualaau petitioned the court for the removal of the no-contact order imposed on Letourneau. The court granted the order, and in 2005 the pair were married.
This case has been an odd one because of Fualaau’s age at the time Letourneau began raping him, Letourneau’s supposed ignorance about the criminality and predatory nature of her actions, and the media’s desire to exploit the situation as just a hot teacher banging her totally willing student. One need only flip the sexes to see how preposterous such an idea is, and how unlikely anyone would applaud the marriage of a female child rape victim to her rapist.
Yet after almost 12 years of marriage, Faulaau filed for separation from Letourneau:
Vili’s signature on the document is dated May 8, but the petition was filed in King County Superior Court in Washington May 9.
In the filing, Vili, who had two girls with his wife, says the children are no longer dependent, and jurisdiction over the children does not apply.
The filing also acknowledges the couple did not file a pre-nuptial agreement or separation contract.
Vili states in the petition that neither spouse owns any real property, and asks the court to divide any personal property fairly. They currently live in the same house, according to the document.
Vili did not want an Order for Protection, he indicated in the document.
Under the section of the filing that asks the petitioner, Vili, if he wants the court to issue a restraining order as part of the final orders in this case; he answers “reserved.”
People magazine quoted an unnamed source supposedly close to the pair:
“They’ve been having issues for awhile now,” says a source close to the couple. “They tried to work through them, but it didn’t work. They’re still committed to being good parents to their children.”
There is no third-party involved in the relationship, the source says.
Fualaau and I are the same age, so I have an understanding of the potential mindset he could have had at 12 when Letourneau began preying on him. If he were desperate for attention and hitting puberty at the same time, a woman giving him the emotional, physical, and sexual attention he desired could be very powerful. If no force or threats were used, I can see how Fualaau could take what amounts to puppy love and convince himself that it was something more. If we consider the news reports accurate, this is the only woman with whom he has had sex or any relationship. She has essentially groomed him to be the perfect fit for her. Letourneau had two years to do this before being arrested, and had the media and society continue it for the seven years she was imprisoned.
It is not clear why Fualaau filed for separation. There was a story claiming he did so to sell marijuana, but Fualaau’s lawyer denied the story. After almost week, there is no further indication for why Fualaau filed the petition, although Letourneau did file a counter petition to have Fualaau’s petition dismissed.
It is anyone’s guess what is going on between the two. I suspect that as Fualaau got older, he realized that no matter what he feels, the situation between him and his wife is at best unhealthy. He admitted as much in a 2015 interview with Barbara Walters:
When Walters asked Fualaau how he’d feel if the girls came home and said they were sleeping with their teacher, he responded, “I don’t support younger kids being married or having a relationship with someone older. I don’t support it.”
Granted, parents are often protective of the children, yet it is telling that someone who would DJ a “Hot For Teacher” night at a bar would not support his own children doing what he did.
I do not think Fualaau will divorce Letourneau. I am not sure why he wants the separation. I am hesitant to speculate given the oddity of the situation. This is not a person who has grown up in anything close to a healthy relationship.
I will say that this is a perfect example of what happens when we a society treat female-perpetrated rape as a joke. When you teach a child that it is okay for an adult to have sex with them, you will create a host of problems that will manifest within a few years.
