It has three components: exploring, practising, and maintaining better lives. The Exploring Better Lives (EBL) programme is carried out over two months, after which the six-month Practicing Better Lives (PBL) programme is taken. The final four-month Maintaining Better Lives (MBL) programme is taken a minimum of one year after completion of the PBL.

What is not often talked about is domestic violence toward men and it is time for them to speak out. Any man–straight, gay, bisexual, transgender, etc.–should be allowed the same resources and protection as women. According to a survey done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2012, one in four males have reported being victims of domestic violence.

Dublin Scout leader jailed for abuse of boys on camping trips — David O’Brien (63) would unzip the boys’ sleeping bags during the night, reach under their pyjamas and fondle their private parts. He forced one boy to masturbate him in secluded areas on different trips and inserted two fingers in and out of the child’s anus during another assault, according to Garda Sheila White. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that he also clasped his hand around another boy’s mouth as he fondled him on a separate trip. O’Brien, of Benburb Street, pleaded guilty to ten counts of indecently assaulting six males in Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork between 1975 and 1980. He has no previous convictions. Continue reading

1 in 3 Victims of Family Violence Are Male — Family First NZ says that research in association with the Department of Internal Affairs, Alcohol and Drug Association of New Zealand and the Canterbury Men’s Centre has found that 38% of recent victims of family violence in the Canterbury region have been male and that male victims are not gaining support. The researcher says that media coverage has only focused on female victims and that there is reluctance for men to speak up.

Boy Scouts sue insurer over sex-abuse settlements — The Boy Scouts of America is taking legal action against a unit of a leading property/casualty insurer, claiming the company refused to provide insurance coverage for settlements of child sex-abuse cases from the late 1970s. The organization alleges that National Union Fire Insurance Company – a Pittsburg unit of American International Group – neither defended nor settled the claims that were brought by sex abuse victims from 1975 to 1980 and totaled about $60 million.

Colorado GOP Legislator Implies Gay Boy Scout Leaders Should Be Drowned — Colorado State Rep. Gordon Klingenschmitt (R-Colorado Springs), in Monday’s edition of his online video series called “Pray in Jesus’ Name,” urged his viewers to pull their children out of the Boy Scouts because “homosexual men mentoring and camping” with boys “will lead to child abuse.” “The children are in danger,” said Klingenschmitt, a first-term Republican. “It’s not about the sexual pleasure of the adults. It should be about protecting innocent children.”

Convicted paedophile caught with thousands of child abuse images — A convicted paedophile, who had been released early from a three-year prison sentence for sexually abusing a 14-year-old-girl, was caught with thousands of child abuse images. Kenneth Cooper, 60, of Magnon Court, Leighton Buzzard, shared 500 of the pictures and movies with other perverts, Luton Crown Court heard on Tuesday. After hearing that Cooper had also been convicted of having indecent images of children in 2004, Judge David Farrell QC said that he regarded him as posing a significant risk of causing sexual harm to children. Another former boy scout files abuse lawsuit – over 100 more could follow — Another lawsuit has been filed against the Boy Scouts of America over alleged abuse by a Scout leader – and his attorneys think at least “a hundred more” lawsuits from Minnesota will follow. Minneapolis-based Noaker Law Firm filed a complaint Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court against the BSA and the Northern Star Council Boy Scouts of America relating to sexual abuse a former scout suffered at the hands of Scout Leader Leland Opalinski.

Bangladesh hunts attackers of teen beaten to death — Hundreds of people have formed a human chain outside the home of the 13-year-old boy who was beaten to death in Bangladesh to protest the killing, as police hunted for a group of men who lashed the boy to a stake, beat him to death, and put a video of the torture online. Bristol man David Lowe abused boys in their school dormitory beds, court hears — A Bristol man who was formerly a housemaster at Westminster Cathedral Choir School abused young boys under the noses of other teachers as they slept in their dormitory beds, a court heard. David Lowe, 61, allegedly targeted 10 separate victims – who cannot be named for legal reasons – in the historic allegations which relate to a period between 1978 and 1984. The attacks are said to have taken place against eight to 13-year-old pupils while he worked at the choir school and Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire – which is run by Benedictine monks.

Boy, 11, testifies of sex abuse by football coach — THE THIN 11-year-old, who looked younger than his years, swiveled back and forth in the witness-stand chair and told a Common Pleas jury yesterday that he used to sleep over some weekends in his football coach’s home bedroom. Other boys also would sleep on coach Leon Watson’s bed, said the boy, who was dressed in a light-blue collared shirt and dark slacks. “We’d be on the bed sometimes and he’d touch us on our private parts, put his mouth on our private parts,” the boy said.

Melissa Edwards faces four felony charges including two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15. Boy ‘abused just one day after arriving at children’s home in Northern Ireland’ — One of the first boys to enter a children’s home in Northern Ireland has said he was abused by a religious brother the day after he arrived. He claimed he was interfered with while having a shower at Rubane House, Co Down, in 1951, under the guise of “horse play”. Once he went missing, he told a public inquiry, was brought home by police, beaten by members of the Catholic order which ran the home and had his hair shaved off in what he claimed was an act of humiliation.

Boy Scouts staff member accused of sexual abuse — A seasonal staff member with the Boy Scouts of America Cascade Pacific Council is accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy, officials confirmed. Elizabeth Monda-Guthrie, 28, was indicted Oct. 6, 2014 on two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and one count of third-degree sexual abuse. She pleaded not guilty Friday afternoon in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Though no amount of money could make up for what happened to Jon David Couzens, attorney Rebecca Randles said, $10 million in compensatory damages plus punitive damages would be fitting.

British Man Raped at Oktoberfest 2014 by Two Assailants — A British man has been raped at this month’s world famous Oktoberfest in Munich, German police have said. The 24-year-old, who has not been named, was attacked by two men at the edge of the festival area. According to police reports, he was relieving himself in the bushes on the outskirts of the Theresienwiese – a large open space where Oktoberfest takes place each year – when he was approached by a man who “made it clear he wanted to have sex with him”.
